Robin Thicke Talks New Single, Discovering What’s Important on Good Morning America

by

ABC/Fred LeeRobin Thicke returned to Good Morning America Wednesday morning where he not only performed his new single “Back Together,” he also opened up about his putting his life back together in the wake of his recent divorce from his ex-wife, Paula Patton.

“Thank you all for the love and support over the last year,” Thicke told his fans.  “Everybody goes through ups and down, but its nice when people stick by you and send you lots of love to help you get through it.”

The singer then revealed his soulful ballad “Morning Sun” is about “fresh starts and new beginnings” and “heralding of a new day.”  However, he quickly pointed out that “Back Together” isn’t about his ex-wife.

“I didn’t write this song, so I can’t take credit for the meaning,” Thicke says of working with producers Max Martin and Savan Kotecha. “But when I met with the amazing producers, I just heard this idea of getting back together and getting yourself back together and you know, what I was going through at the time I really related to that and connected with that. So it’s more about the theme of getting yourself back together with love and partnership.”

Thicke says he recently took a rare year off, during which he spent more time with his five-year-old son, Julian.  “I started, you know, songwriting and producing and singing professionally when I was 16. And I never really stopped until last year,” Thicke says. “Then I took some time off to just be with my son and my family. It helps you gain perspective on whats important in your life.”

Armed with a new perspective on life, the singer goes on the explain that he now knows what matters most.  “When you have some tough times you call on your parents and you call on your grandfather for advice,” he says. “I spent so much time with my son and that’s what made me realize whats most important.”

Thicke is scheduled to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday and The Late Late Show with James Corden August 19. The singer’s upcoming, eighth album will arrive later this year.
