ABC/Rick RowelSamuel L. Jackson has joined the star-studded cast of Spinning Gold, a film about the life of legendary record executive Neil Bogart.
According to Deadline, Jackson has been tapped to play Parliament leader and Godfather of Funk George Clinton in the film. Bogart was the man behind Casablanca Records, which helped launch the careers of 70’s music stars like Donna Summer, KISS, Parliament, The Village People, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight, Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield.
Bogart died at the age of 39 from cancer and lymphoma.
Directed and written by Neil’s son, Timothy Scott Bogart, the film also stars Kenan Thompson as Motown’s Berry Gordy, Jason Isaacs as Bogart’s father Al and singer Jason Derulo as Ron Isley of the Isley Brothers.
In addition, former SNL star Jay Pharoah plays WBLS radio DJ Frankie Crocker, and D.L. Hughley plays Parliament’s Bootsy Collins.
Singer Jazmine Sullivan will plays Gladys Knight, Steven Strait and X Ambassadors’ Sam Harris play KISS leaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, and Neil Patrick Harris plays KISS co-manager Bill Aucoin. The person playing Donna Summer has yet to be announced.
Tony-nominated Broadway actor Jeremy Jordan will play Bogart.
According to Deadline, classic songs which will be featured in the movie include Summers’ “Last Dance“and “I Feel Love,” Parliament’s “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker),” The Isleys’ “Fight the Power” and “It’s Your Thing,” Knight’s “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Withers’ “Lean on Me,” Mayfield’s “Freddie’s Dead” and “Superfly,” KISS’ “Rock and Roll All Nite” and the Village People’s “YMCA” and “In the Navy.”
Production on Spinning Gold is set to start in Montreal on July 16.
