She’s got a New Attitude: Patti LaBelle dishes on her ‘Greenleaf’ character and working with Lynn Whitfield

by

ABC/Eric McCandlessPatti LaBelle is ready to show off her new attitude in the third season of OWN’s megachurch drama Greenleaf.

Ahead of the season three premiere, LaBelle is dishing on the series, which she says she’s been a fan of for a long time.

“I love this show. I’ve been watching from the first season,” LaBelle tells ABC Radio. “And when I was called to do this episode, I said, ‘Are you serious?'”

As far as her character, Christian motivational speaker Maxine Patterson, LaBelle says Maxine is extremely tight with the matriarch of the Greenleaf family, Lady Mae, played by Lynn Whitfield.

“I’m actually Maye’s best friend from back in the day,” LaBelle says of her character. “When we used to have soda pop as our beverage and, you know, pork rinds and all that kind of stuff– we ghetto girls from back in the day.”

Patti continues, “So, she needs me to come into her life, actually, to be a word for her — to put something greater in her ear. And I did, I let her know that it’s time for you to stop being that first lady and own your own ministry.”

While Patti is an amazing talent in her own right, the singer explains she was excited to work with someone she truly admires.

“I only worked basically with Lynn Whitfield, who’s the best actress in the world,” she says. “And I just loved working with her and learning from her.”

Even though Patti’s appearance on the series is limited, the singer says there is definitely one thing you can bet on this season.

“You know if Patti is there, Patti has to sing right?” she laughs.

Greenleaf, starring Merle DandridgeKeith David and Deborah Joy Winans, premieres Tuesday and Wednesday, August 28 and 29 on OWN at 10 p.m. ET.
