Two Motown legends — renowned singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson and label founder Berry Gordy — will be the first recipients of the Architect of Sound Awards, prestigious honors created by the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The awards will be handed out during a Motown-themed gala celebration on November 11 at Club Nokia at L.A. LIVE that also will mark the museum’s five-year anniversary.
Smokey will receive the Architect of Sound: Artist Award, while Berry will be recognized with the Architect of Sound: Vision Award. The event, which will be hosted by famed producer and American Idol judge Randy Jackson, will feature a reception and dinner that will be followed by a special tribute concert. Multiple Grammy winners Boyz II Men and Kelly Rowland are the first performers confirmed for the show.
Proceeds raised by Architect of Sound Awards gala will go toward funding the Grammy Museum’s various exhibits and programs. The awards salute people whose work has made a significant impact on American music, especially within a particular genre.
In announcing Robinson and Gordy as honorees, Grammy Museum executive director Bob Santelli noted, “Their contributions to Motown have truly changed the landscape of American music. We are grateful to these extraordinary industry leaders who will be helping us celebrate not only our first gala, but also our upcoming five-year anniversary.”
