Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty ImagesBill Cosby spent Father’s Day in prison in Pennsylvania, where he’s serving his sentence for sexual assault.  But when he decided to mark the day by posting on Instagram and Twitter, “It’s America’s Dad,” he was ripped by social media.

He wrote, “Hey, Hey, Hey…It’s America’s Dad…I know it’s late, but to all of the Dads… It’s an honor to be called a Father, so let’s make today a renewed oath to fulfilling our purpose — strengthening our families and communities.”  Among the hashtags he added: #AmericasFavoriteDad and #FarFromFinished

The 81-year-old entertainer was known as “America’s Dad” when The Cosby Show dominated the ratings in the ’80s, but his conviction has severely damaged his legacy — and his tweet prompted numerous negative responses.

One person commented on Instagram, “Time for you not to preach anymore for you took too many women and used them like a Master did at a Plantation…what you should do is be quiet for the rest of your live and hope that we all forget about you!!!

Another person wrote, “Always a good idea to take advice from a serial rapist…..go f**k yourself!”

Cosby’s spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt, says the message was posted to support a group called Man Up, which assists minority youth.

“Mr. Cosby’s [message] consisted of telling these men who have been incarcerated for many years, but are up for parole soon…to…take the word ‘disadvantage’ and remove the ‘dis, and start focusing on the advantage,” Wyatt tells USA Today. “That advantage is to be better fathers and productive citizens.”

Cosby is serving a three-to-ten year sentence for aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand at his home in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004.
