The-Dream Announces Departure from Def Jam

by

Def JamAfter releasing four studio albums for the label, The-Dream has announced that he’s severed ties with his longtime label home, Def Jam Recordings.

The-Dream revealed the surprising news by posting a picture of the record label’s logo to Instagram. “I will miss this logo. It all started here,” he wrote in the accompanying caption. “Love Everything that I achieved there, EXODUS THE-DREAM #exodusthedream.”

He then recalled the highlights of his career with Def Jam, beginning with his songwriting credit for Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” He wrote, “Started with Umbrella…… Since then it’s been reigning forever.

Although The-Dream did not explain the reason for his departure, he hinted at issues with creative control, especially on his third effort, Love King.

“Under appreciated and unfinished! When no one would turn in a Album that year. We did, it was a grave mistake,” he wrote. “But I am proud of my work regardless. To much EGO.”

The-Dream also posted a brief video of waves crashing in the ocean and hinted at his upcoming project as an independent act. “Let the New Tides bring The Things not yet seen,” he wrote in the caption. “There’s more where those came from! We have only heard what I’ve brought to shore the things that lay in the deep want lye there for much longer.”

The singer’s last effort, IV Play, was released in May last year.
