Tiffany Haddish will produce and play Olympic track and field icon Florence Griffith Joyner, also known as “Flo Jo,” in an upcoming biopic.
According to Variety, the Grammy-winning comedian and actress teamed up with sports content studio game1 to produce the film, which will tell Joyner’s life story, including running in the 100-meter and 200-meter races in the 1988 Olympics. Joyner died at 38 from an epileptic seizure and served as a hero to many, including a young Haddish.
“I am looking forward to telling Flo-Jo’s story the way it should be told,” Haddish says in a statement. “My goal with this film is making sure that younger generations know my ‘she-ro’ Flo-Jo, the fastest woman in the world to this day, existed.”
Game1 and Haddish also announced they will produce an array of companion content, including a documentary series and a podcast. To help prepare for such an athletic role, Haddish has also been working with Flo-Jo’s widower and former training coach, Al Joyner.
Variety has also learned that Alfre Woodward and Blair Underwood will reunite in the upcoming psychological thriller, Viral. With Underwood as director, producer, and in the lead role as Andrew, Woodard will play “Dr. Johnetta, a psychiatrist specializing in deep trauma.”
Woodard and Underwood previously starred together in Netflix’s Juanita, Love Letters, and The Wishing Tree for Showtime.
Lastly, Deadline reports that singer and actress Letoya Luckett will co-star in Fox’s new drama, Our Kind of People, from Lee Daniels and mixed-ish writer Karin Gist. The series also stars Yaya DaCostafrom Chicago Med and Morris Chestnut.
