Tory Lanez talks Caribbean roots and reggae capsule album

by

Joseph Okpako/WireImageTory Lanez posed in Fendi for the April cover of Flaunt magazine, in which he discusses his Afro-Caribbean roots.

The Loner rapper and singer discloses that his Dutch mother is from Curaçao, and his dad is from Barbados, while the rest of his family is Guyanese.

“I’ve always been island-oriented,” says Lanez. “What a lot of people don’t know is my grandfather is Garfield Sobers. He’s one of the best cricket players in the world. I come from a long line of greatness that stems from the islands.”

“I’ve always wanted to make sure that, no matter what I do, I’m paying certain respects to my ancestors and ancestry,” he continues. “Showing certain love in reminding people where I come from. I’ll never forget where I come from.”

The “LUV” artist explained his forthcoming reggae capsule album will display his love and appreciation for the islands.

“That’s the reason I always double back and show love. The people from the islands appreciate me and understand me the most,” said Tory. “It’s a root thing, it’s a cultural thing. They deserve it all. The Reggae capsule is incredible. I mixed Reggae with a lot of Afrobeats. It’s Jamaican mixed with African vibe. I have all the dope artists.”

Tory said it feels “incredible” being an independent artist after fulfilling his contract with Interscope Records.

“I’m free to do whatever I want. I’m not dictated by anybody else’s opinion of my art. I can move freely and live freely through my music and through my craft,” he declares. “I’m happy to be independent.”
