Tweet‘s “Hurt Me” seems to tell an all too familiar story about the side effects of putting someone in the friend zone. The singer tells ABC Radio that the lead single from her upcoming album Charlene is based on a real-life experience with an over zealous male friend.
“We were friends, I knew we were friends and he should have known we were friends, because that’s what I said all the time, but he insisted on telling his friends that we were together, doing little crazy things from being mad that we couldn’t be more — like talk to my best friend to try to get a rise out of me or doing just crazy stuff,” the singer says. “I would say, ‘It don’t matter what you do, it’s not going to change my mind,’ so that’s where the song is inspired from. You know, basically do whatever you’re going to do, it’s not going to change my mind of us being just friends.”
Tweet says that she was shocked that others could relate to her situation. “I’m totally surprised with the friend zone phrase and all that,” she says. “It’s evident that there are people going through the same thing, but I am shocked.”
Charlene will be her first studio album since 2005’s It’s Me Again. The set is slated for release in early 2016.
