BETThe story of Uptown Records, the iconic label that launched the career of stars including Mary J. Blige, Diddy and The Notorious. B.I.G., will be told in a new BET miniseries.

Andre Harrell, who began his career as a member of the rap duo Dr. Jeckyll and My. Hyde, founded Uptown Records in 1986 in New York City.

“I am thrilled to partner with BET Networks and Jesse Collins Entertainment to share my story, the rise of Uptown Records and successful black entrepreneurship, and the management and cultivation of some of the most iconic artists to come out of the late 80s and 90s hip hop, R&B, and soul music era,” Harrell says in a statement.

Uptown’s roster also included Heavy D and the Boyz, Jodeci, Guy led by Teddy Riley, Al B. Sure, Father MC, Christopher Williams and many more.

Diddy began his career as an intern at Uptown and rose to talent director as he produced many of the label’s hits. After being fired in 1993, he formed Bad Boy Records and signed Biggie to his label.

In addition to founding Uptown, Harrell served as CEO of Motown Records. He also enjoyed success in TV and film, producing the 1991 movie Strictly Business featuring Halle Berry in her first lead role, and Honey in 2003 starring Jessica Alba. Harrell also served as executive producer of the 90s crime series New York Undercover starring Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo.

Uptown will be a three-part miniseries that will premiere in 2020.
