Venue, Serena Williams Celebrate 20 Years in the Public Eye

by

Venus and Serena Williams

Apparently, time flies when you’re winning Grand Slam tennis titles. Twenty years ago this month, the world got its first look at Venus and Serena Williams when they dominated the 2000 Olympics.  After Venus scored 32 straight wins to earn a gold medal, the New York Times declared it “the Summer of Venus.” The following day, she and Serena were each given a gold medal in the doubles category.  Since then, the seemingly-unstoppable siblings have racked up 30 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. They’ve also won more Olympic medals, with Venus bringing home a total of five — for golds, one silver — and Serena winning four.  Is it hard to believe the Williams sisters have been around for 20 years? Has tennis changed since 2000?
