It was a history making night at the Oscars as Jordan Peele became the first African-American writer to win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Get Out. Peele says that it was those who came before him that paved the way for his success.
“I almost never became a director because there was such a shortage of role models,” he said. “We had Spike [Lee], we had John Singleton, we had the Peebleses, we had the Hughes brothers, but they felt like the exception to the rule.”
Kobe Bryant also made history as the first NBA player to win an Oscar! The former L.A. Laker won the award for his animated short “Dear Basketball.”
“I mean, as basketball players, we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble. I’m glad we do a little bit more than that,” Bryant said during his acceptance speech.
Bryant’s remark was directed at talk-show host Laura Ingraham who told LeBron James to “shut up at dribble” after he spoke out against President Donald Trump.
