Black All-Female Row Team is Making History

by

KRNB – A group of five black women from the sister islands of Antigua and Barbuda are on an historic mission as the first all-black and all email row team to compete in the renown Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge — a 3000 nautical mile journey across the Atlantic.

With no rowing experience before this year, Elvira Bell, Christal Clashing, Samara Emmanuel, and Kevinia Francis and one alternate — collectively known as Team Antigua Island Girls — embarked on an historic journey in one of the world’s most rigorous rowing competitions all in the name of charity.  The competition typically takes up to 30 days to complete.

According to ESSENCE, in addition to breaking barriers, the women are aiming to raise $150,000 dollars for Cottage of Hope, a transitional home for neglected, abandoned, and abused girls.

As ESSENCE reporter Tanya A. Christian writes, “Give a Black woman a challenge and watch her rise to the occasion.”

Christian talked to the women before they set out on their journey who set out on the adventurous endeavor with the understanding it’s a “culmination of hard work, sacrifice, prayer, and grit.”
