Bryshere Y. Gray and Ta’Rhonda Jones talks Empire Season 4 and the big changes for their characters

by

Bryshere Y. Gray; Michael Lavine/FOXAhead of Empire’s season four premiere next Wednesday, stars Bryshere Y. Gray and Ta’Rhonda Jones are weighing in on what the future holds for their characters.

Gray, who plays Hakeem Lyon on the show, says he’s looking to see growth.

“Well my character this season… I asked the writers — I needed something to feel like my character’s going to grow,” Gray tells ABC Radio.

Last season, Hakeem struggled with his family over his rap career and had difficulty adjusting to being a new father to his daughter Bella.

But according to Gray, Hakeem’s progress as artist and father are only part of the reasons why fans should be tuning in next week.

“I think it gets better and better — well, I don’t think,” Gray explains.

“I got the baby situation with Bella and then you got Lucious [Lyon] — he’s been blown up. So you got to see how dad’s feeling by the start of fourth season.”

Ta’Rhonda Jones, who plays Porsha on the show, also says this season means big changes for her character.

“I think you guys are going to see a little bit different than what we’re used to seeing from her — as far as her appearance,” Jones explains.

“She’s not as ‘ratchet,’ she’s going to be a little more classy this season.”

According to Jones, toning down Porsha’s outrageous personality has been a work in progess, but one she’s glad to finally see happen.

“We’ve been discussing this for awhile and I think we finally came down to some common ground,” she laughs.

The fourth season of Empire premieres Wednesday, September 27 at 8 p.m. ET.
