Cynthia Erivo is set to produce and lead a Searchlight remake of the 1979 Bette Midler-starring film The RoseVariety has learned.

Producing the project under her newly launched Edith’s Daughter banner, Erivo will star as a self-destructive female rock star who “struggles to deal with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of those who surround her.” According to Variety, Erivo’s take on the story puts “a contemporary lens on the high price of fame.” Centered on fame and addiction, the original film was loosely based on the life and career of Janis Joplin, who died at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose. On Instagram, Erivo said taking on the project was a “dream come true.”

In other news, Tiffany Haddish is teaming up with Paul Feig to produce the musical dance dramedy Throw It BackDeadline reports. Directed by Shadae Lamar Smith, the film follows Wytrell, a high school senior who has a chance to stand out after a “controversial Miami rapper decides to feature her dance team” in his latest music video. Haddish is also expected to star in the film alongside actress Shahadi Wright Joseph, who will play Wytrell.

Meanwhile, Jill Scott will share the small screen with Barry Watson in a film reboot of Highway to HeavenDeadline has learned. Unlike the classic Michael Landon TV series, which aired from 1984 to 1989 on NBC, the Lifetime film will be a modern take on the series, with Scott to play a new angel who comes down to Earth to help people in crisis. Similar to the series, the film will also center on the themes of “love and kindness” as well as “addressing contemporary social and emotional issues” while using a female angel as its centerpiece.
