DJ Mustard says he always knew Ella Mai was destined for stardom

In the span of a year, the U.K. newcomer has accumulated hit after hit, embarked on her first-ever headlining tour and, most recently, snagged three Billboard Music Awards.

But if you ask DJ Mustard, he always knew Mai was bound for superstardom — and that also meant convincing the naysayers.

“I always knew Ella would be who she is today,” the mega-producer told ABC Radio. “It was just getting the people to see that, you know what I’m saying. Now, she’s getting recognized for the hard work she’s been putting in and I’m super proud of her.”

Initially, Mai began her career by singing covers of popular songs on Instagram. That’s when she was discovered by Mustard, who later signed her to his 10 Summers record label in 2014 and ultimately produced her Grammy-winning hit, “Boo’d Up.”

In the five years since signing Mai, Mustard says her growth as a performer has been incredible to watch.

“When she first came I don’t think she had actually performed or did her own thing before and now she is. And she’s doing a full-on show with production and it’s crazy to see it all unfold.”

Wednesday night, Mai took the stage in Nashville to wrap up the North American leg of her sold-out tour. Fans can also catch her for two consecutive nights in Detroit come July, before she heads to Ireland in September.  Check out all of her tour dates at EllaMai.com.
