Donald Glover releases surprise new album only to take it down hours later

Neilson Barnard/Getty ImagesIn case you didn’t hear, Donald Glover is out with a brand new album.  Unfortunately, you can’t listen to it anymore after the rapper expunged it from his website hours later.

Deadline reports that the 12-song album, which featured guest vocals from Ariana Grande21 Savage and SAwas posted to his website early Sunday.  Glover, who also went by the stage name Childish Gambino, advertised his new music with hand drawn artwork of a large panicked crowd.  He also streamed his new songs on a continuous loop.

Glover didn’t release song titles or credits nor did he allow fans to pause, skip, or rewind the music.

Half a day later the untitled album vanished without a trace — confusing fans and music industry analysts alike.  Was it a brilliant marketing tactic to generate buzz or was he simply hosting a collective streaming party for a few hours?

Now, the Grammy-winner’s website is blank with “Donald Glover Presents” in light gold lettering.

The Community actor previously confirmed he was permanently retiring his Childish Gambino persona, cluing in fans that this is an introduction of a new era in his music.
