Mike Coppola/Getty ImagesAfter Beyonce released her tour-de-force “visual album” Lemonade, which documented the emotional journey of a woman — presumably she — cheated on by her husband, the husband’s now made his first public commentary on the matter.
Many have wondered how Bey’s hubby Jay Z felt about Lemonade. He even appears in the film, even though it seemingly outs him as a cheater. E! Online reports Jay’s now released a new rap that addresses the subject. Titled “All the Way,” it’s a collaboration with Fat Joe, Remy Ma, French Montana and Infared.
At the beginning of Jay’s verse, he raps, “You know you made it when the fact your marriage made it is worth millions/Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is/Survival of the littlest.”
E! notes that the “Lemonade” part of the lyric is a reference to a line in the 1992 Gang Starr track “DWYCK,” in which the late MC Guru raps, “Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is/I get more props and stunts than Bruce Willis.”
E! adds that Jay uses his verse to refer to Prince, rapping, “Prince left his masters where they safe and sound/We never gonna let the elevator take him down.” That’s a reference to a line in Prince’s hit “Let’s Go Crazy:” “Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?/Oh, no, let’s go!”
The song is now streaming exclusively, of course, on Jay Z’s platform, Tidal.
