Mark Cant/FoxLast week, director Lee Daniels hinted that Mariah Carey is making a guest appearance on his smash Fox series Empire. Now, co-star Jussie Smollett has confirmed the speculation.
“That rumor is true,” Smollett told People. “That makes me feel so good to say that rumor is true.”
While Carey has yet to begin filming, the actor is certain they will get along great. “She’s just the best,” Smollett said. “She says ‘darling’ a lot. But I say ‘darling’ too as a joke, so it works perfectly. This friendship works very well.”
The actor recalled his first interaction with the self-proclaimed diva: “She’s a good human being and a really sweet lady … don’t get me wrong, she’s a diva. I said, ‘Do you own flats?’ She’s like ‘Darling, no.’ Okay. That’s why she has dope calf muscles. [She has] the greatness of a diva, but [is also] the regular, chill girl that you just want to chill with.”
The upcoming guest role will mark the fourth collaboration for Carey and Daniels, who have previously teamed on 2008’s Tennessee, 2009’s Precious and 2013’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
Empire‘s second season premieres September 23 at 9 p.m. Eastern on Fox.
