Cindy Ord/Getty ImagesKelly Rowland delivers her most bold performance yet with her new single, “Coffee.”
The unapologetic single and video serve as an ode to black women — “every shade, every coffee color, every curve, every essence and what they gave me,” she tells Essence. “My intention I set for the video was to take the light in yourself and your sexuality [and put it in] a God perspective, in a way where you don’t have to get any approval from anybody else.”
The video positions Rowland and her melanated friends dancing sensually on the beach with the water and blazing sun as their background, reminding us all what it was like to be outside during this time of COVID-19 lockdown.
The Destiny’s Child star intentionally wanted to include “diversified representations of Black skin color, hair, and body sizes front and center.”
“I just wanted the video to come across like, ‘Here we are standing in all of our beauty, in all of our coffee-colored shades, in all of our greatness and you going to take this in’,” Rowland shared.
There’s still no word if this single stands alone or comes from Kelly’s long-awaited fifth studio album, to follow 2013’s Talk a Good Game.
While in self-quarantine, Kelly has been hosting her intimate “Coffee with Kelly” chats on Instagram Live.
