Mariah Carey to Be Honored at the GLAAD Media Awards

The event, which takes place on May 14 at the Waldorf Astoria, will be hosted by Orange Is the New Black actress Laverne Cox.

Mariah is set to receive the LGBT media organization’s Ally Award, which is presented to “a media figure who has consistently used their platform to support and advance LGBT equality and acceptance.” The award will be presented by director Lee Daniels. Past recipients of the award have included Janet Jackson, Cher, Russell Simmons, Elizabeth Taylor and Patti LaBelle.

“Through her music and outspoken support, Mariah Carey has inspired and empowered countless LGBT fans across the globe,” GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement sent to The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard. She is a longtime ally and friend to the LGBT community who has worked tirelessly to move acceptance and inclusion forward.”

The GLAAD Media Awards honors media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.

Pop singer Demi Lovato was honored at the Los Angeles ceremony earlier month and actor Robert De Niro will be receiving the Excellence in Media Award at the New York ceremony. For a full list of this this year’s media awards nominees go to GLAAD’s website.
