Steve Granitz/WireImageMariah Carey was overwhelmed with joy as she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday.

The singer, who donned dark sunglasses during her acceptance speech, approached the podium with her twins, Monroe and Moroccan, both of whom expressed their love for their mom. “Oh my gosh, this is so overwhelming today,” Mariah told the crowd. “I never expected this, I’m so emotional.”

After composing herself, the singer went on to thank her “Lambs” — her nickname for her devoted fans.

“I just want to thank all of the fans for coming here today, thank you so much. I can’t thank you enough for being here with me, really. You’re melting my heart, you’re making me cry and that’s why I’m keeping on my sunglasses,” she says.  “This is a huge honor, a childhood dream come true and it’s been a long time coming, so they say, and I’m very, very, very honored and very  humble and just so thankful to be here.”

Mariah was selected to receive a star in 2007, but it was this year that she actually set the date that she’d be able to attend the ceremony.

During the star’s unveiling, Carey was joined by close friends, including music producer and record executive L.A. Reid, who says that Carey deserved two stars: one for her talent and one for her character.

After praising Mariah, Precious director Lee Daniels hinted that she’d make a guest appearance in his smash Fox series Empire.  Her frequent music video collaborator, director Brett Ratner, joked that he initially thought all of her songs were about him, but then joked that her new material will be dedicated to her rumored billionaire boyfriend, James Packer.

The singer claimed the 2,556th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  She’s the best-selling female artist of all time with more than 200 million albums sold to date worldwide and 18 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles.
