Rodin Eckenroth/WireImageMelanie Fiona still can’t quite believe that she gets to star as the legendary Chaka Khan in season two of BET’s American Soul, which returns on May 27.

“I still can’t believe this actually happened,” Melanie wrote on Instagram, announcing her upcoming new role. “Yup! It’s ya girl as the iconic Chaka Khan,” whom she called a “huge inspiration.”  Many fans left comments noting how much Melanie resembled Chaka.

American Soul debuted last year, chronicling the highs and lows of Don Cornelius, the legendary host and producer of the nationally syndicated TV show Soul Train, played on the series by Sinqua Walls.

Melanie’s ready for the “The fashion, the fire, the gift” of the role. “If ya’ll only knew the years of visual comparisons and manifestation that lay behind this opportunity,” she wrote.  “It’s very emotional for me. I’ve done some really cool things in my life and career, but this one definitely feels like destiny.”

Those “cool things” include three studio albums, hits like “It Kills Me” and “Give It to Me Right,” and two Grammy awards for “Fool for You,” with Cee Lo Green.
