Monty Brinton/CBSNe-Yo made headlines for proposing to his now-fiancee Crystal Renay late August, but it looks like he actually popped the question earlier this year.
In an interview with the JasmineBrand.com, Renay revealed that his marriage proposal was first made back in January when they were alone in a hotel room. Following public scrutiny, she adds that he decided to do a second proposal with an engagement ring. “On my birthday, he just decided to re-propose because he didn’t like the way people were treating me,” the model explained.
Renay also denied rumors that the singer’s ex-fiance and mother of his two children, Monyetta Shaw, was unaware of their engagement prior to the social media postings. “At my requirement, he told her way before that,” she says, although Shaw made is seem otherwise. “I like her as a person. I would never allow her to be blindsided by something from the media instead of hearing it from us first.”
Despite what her detractors may think, Renay says she is cool with Shaw. “She’s a fun person to be around and I hate the misconception that people want us to not like each other because it’s not the case.”
We will soon see Shaw in a new BET reality show alongside cast member and fellow model Eva Marcille, which she says Ne-Yo fully supports. “He knows that I’m not gonna get on there…and embarrass myself. I’m [gonna] keep it real. He wants the world to know me for me and who he sees and not what people perceive me to be.”
The couple are expecting their first child together in March. Their son will be named after Ne-Yo.
