Steve Granitz/WireImageSaweetie and Quavo have become one of hip-hop’s hottest couples since meeting on social media in 2018.
In a new GQ feature, Quavo and Saweetie reflect on their budding romance, since Quavo slid in her DMs with this famous line: “I told her, ‘You an “Icy Girl,” you need a glacier boy,'” a node to Saweetie’s 2017 platinum single and Quavo’s nickname.
Quavo said he found Saweetie on the explore page, and after a few emoji exchanges led to months of hours-long phone conversations, the two ended up on a messy first date at a strip club, which Quavo said “sounds more like an episode of Donald Glover‘s Atlanta” show on FX.
Saweetie, aka Diamonté Harper, credits Quavo with teaching her to be a “better communicator,” something she struggled with growing up.
She admitted, “I feel like I’m growing and I’m maturing because of him — not the music, not Saweetie, but Diamonté.…I don’t know how I would be as a person if I would have never met him.”
In return, Quavo said, “I give her Quavious [Keyate Marshall]. I give her what my mama calls me.”
“When she talks to me, and when we started talking to each other, the Saweetie [stuff] go out the window, and the Quavo [stuff] go out the window,” Quavo added. “I don’t let people inside my life, and I let her inside. And she’s helping me grow up. She’s showing me how to love a woman.”
