by

ABC/Randy HolmesJohn Legend already has an Oscar under his belt — for Best Song — but now he’s trying his hand at acting. The singer is joining the cast of the musical dramedy La La Land, according to Showbiz 411. He reportedly also will be writing songs for his character to perform in the film.

The movie, from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, stars Ryan Gosling as a jazz pianist and Emma Stone as an aspiring actress. J.K. Simmons, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as an abusive music teacher in Whiplash, is also on board to star.

Variety reports La La Land is set for a July 15, 2016 release.

The last time John appeared in a film was 2008’s Soul Men. Earlier this year, he and rapper Common won the Oscar for their song “Glory” from the movie Selma. He’s also signed on be the music supervisor on a new WGN America drama series called Underground.
