Courtesy of SaweetieSaweetie is channeling her inner diva with her professional acting debut as Indigo, Joey Bada$$‘ protégé artist, on Freeform’s grown-ish.

Ahead of the midseason premiere later this month, Entertainment Weekly spoke to the Icy rapper who says she loved playing the bossy character.

“I think Indigo is just a little bit of a [demanding person],” Saweetie says. “She means well, but just sometimes she says the wrong things.”

In the second half of season three, fans will find Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson in Miami working on a music video for both Bada$$ and Indigo. Saweetie says one of the best things about playing her character was getting to connect with Yara herself.

“My favorite thing about [playing] Indigo was when both her and Yara were on the same page and having a good time,” she says. “You can just see the love and excitement that Indigo has for [Zoey].”

Saweetie says her connection with Yara also played off-screen when Shahidi helped her transform into Indigo.

“I would ask [Yara] for advice, and she was so easy to work with, so it was an honor and a pleasure to work by with her,” Saweetie says. “Even if I would mess up sometimes, she was just so helpful. It’s always nice to work with someone who wants you to do as good as them.”

Saweetie says she also took the extra step to prepare for the role by hiring an acting coach.

“I wanted to make sure I delivered,” she says. “I feel like with roles, whether if it’s an episode or in a music video, you always have to commit to the emotion of what you’re trying to portray.”

Grown-ish returns Thursday, January 21 at 8 p.m. on Freeform.
