Swizz Beatz reveals he struck out when he first pursued Alicia Keys

Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary on July 31, and in spite of the pandemic, their lives are flourishing.

Swizz and iconic producer Timbaland created the Verzuz battles which have become a global success, earning them the title of “Titans” on TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people list. Keys is celebrating her 20th anniversary in music with a YouTube Original docuseries, Noted: Alicia Keys The Untold Stories, which debuts September 30.

Her Grammy winning husband, whose legal name is Kasseem Daoud Dean, met her when they were teenagers. He admits he struck out at first when he wanted to date her.

“I’ve known her since I was about 15,” says Swizz, now 43, in the trailer for his TV One Uncensored episode. “I asked for her number. I didn’t get it at the time.”

However, Dean’s persistence paid off. “I think I came back strong,” he say proudly. The couple have two sons together, and he has produced several of her songs. 

Swizz, who is an art collector as well as a musician, has a long list of writing and production credits with other stars, including tracks with BeyoncéJay-Z, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Ronald Isley, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Diddy, Snoop Dogg, and DMX.

Swizz Beatz’ Uncensored episode airs Sunday, September 26 at 10 p.m. ET, on TV One.
