Salt-N-Pepa are back in full effect in their new biopic, expected to be “the Lifetime movie event of the year” but fans on social media aren’t buying it.

The first trailer for the upcoming biopic, courtesy of ET, details the life of the first female rap group to go platinum and win a Grammy, changing the impact of women in hip-hop forever.

Rising actresses G.G. Townson and Laila Odom will star as Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton. The biopic, which for now appears to be called Salt-n-Pepa The Movie, follows the girls’ younger days as nursing students at Queensborough Community College in New York City, to meeting music producer Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor, who helped launch their music career in the 90s.

James and Denton are currently estranged from the group’s former DJ, Spinderella.

The trailer also hints at sexism, sisterhood, and overcoming obstacles in a male-dominated industry, leading to classics like “Let’s Talk About Sex,” and often sampled tracks “Shoop” and “Push It.

Fans on social media had mixed views about the film, criticizing casting and production quality of the Mario Van Peebles-directed film.

One user said, “Them girls look nothing like Salt N Pepa. Who casted this?”

Another said,  “Lord I see Wendy William’s back to producing because that Salt N Pepa Preview looks a hot [damn] mess.”

Lifetime has yet to announce an official release date for the biopic.
