Zendaya dishes about the upcoming film ‘Malcolm & Marie’

by

ABC/Ida Mae AstuteAs InStyle‘s September cover star, Zendaya opened up about her role in the upcoming film Malcolm & Marie, also starring John David Washington.

The film was secretly filmed as production studios were shut down due to COVID-19.

“It was an incredible experience. I’d been talking to Sam [Levinson, creator of Euphoria] often during the quarantine,” she shared with the magazine. “Sometimes he’d just call to chat about life. And eventually, I said to him, ‘I need to do something creative.’ So we bounced ideas back and forth, and then he started writing.”

Production began shortly after Sam reached out to John David to be apart of the project, which was funded with their “own money.”

“Our crew was a very small group of people who are also from Euphoria,” Zendaya said of her Emmy-nominated show. “And the number-one thing was safety. Everyone had to quarantine and get tested in order to shoot in isolation.”

The team created their “own little bubble” but were still able to workshop and rehearse together.

“It was very much like a play,” Zendaya explains. “I did my own hair and makeup and dressed in my own clothes. And then we shot in black and white on film, so we’ll see how it turns out. I think we were able to create something really special. And I’m grateful that we learned how to do it on our own.”

As the pandemic continues, Zendaya wonders how the world will see the “many beautiful projects” she has in the works.

“But that’s when it’s time to get even more innovative and figure out how we are going to exist in this industry with this new world,” she said. “I think quarantine, especially for creatives, has forced us all to think about our work differently.”
