Legendary urban theater director/producer/playwright Shelly Garrett has died after a battle with stomach cancer. Known as the ‘Godfather of Urban Theater’, Garrett paved the way for the likes of Tyler Perry and David E. Talbert by introducing the black comedy play.
Garrett’s most popular play “Beauty Shop” played before sell-out crowds and still holds box office records in more than 55 cities.
Shelly Garrett was 71.
