Pari DukovicWith starring roles in the historical NASA drama Hidden Figures and Golden Globe Best Motion Picture-winning film Moonlight, Janelle Monáe hopes that her involvement in both movies helps to reinvent images of black individuals on the big screen.
“I feel a responsibility to speak out for the Other. I want to redefine what it means to be young, black, wild, and free in America,” she tells GQ magazine.
Furthermore, the “Yoga” artist anticipates a world where black actors will be able to showcase their talents in a variety of motion pictures meant for different audiences.
“I want to see more black people. Not just in films like Moonlight. Big-budget films, too,” she adds.
Hidden Figures and Moonlight are both in theaters now.
