Ashanti serves face on the cover of PAPER magazine, says new project will be soul-touching R&B

by

ABC/Paula LoboAshanti is looking fierce as the latest cover star for PAPER magazine. On Monday, the “Foolish” singer shared the sultry cover image, via her Instagram account, in which she’s sporting a plunging pinstriped dress, electric-blue hair and a pair of oversized shades.

And inside the magazine’s buzzy “Break The Internet” issue, the former Murder Inc. signee dishes on her expansive career,  the importance of her forthcoming project and the current state of the music industry. The latter being a space which she feels is lacking a sense of community right now.

“There are not a lot of labels that are a crew that really celebrate together,” Ashanti notes. “I don’t know where we are right now, it’s a weird space. But I do see a lot of rappers — men and women — making up instead of tearing each other down, and I’m really happy about that. It’s a ray of hope for me.”

As for her upcoming music, Ashanti reveals that she plans on covering some “vulnerable topics” she’s never touched on before.

“I think people will be like, ‘What did she say?’ which is a really cool thing,” she explains. “The feedback has been great so far — I’ve had conversations about there being a real void for true, soul-touching R&B, and that’s what I feel I’m accomplishing with this record.”

As previously reported, Ashanti has been hard at work.  She told ABC Radio that she has a collaborative EP with Metro Boomin in the works, as well as a feature film, titled Stuck.
