Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes send their support and prayers after reports that John Singleton’s in a coma

Unique Nicole/Getty ImagesBlack Hollywood’s finest are rallying around filmmaker John Singleton, following the latest report that he had slipped into a coma after suffering another major stroke on Wednesday.

Critically-acclaimed director Ava DuVernay asked fans to pray for Singleton, who she noted was a “lovely man.”

“Lifting my highest thoughts + prayers of intercession for John Singleton,” DuVernay tweeted. “His films helped form me. His kindness lifted me up. I remember him coming to the premiere of my indie years ago. Showing love/support for a fellow black director from L.A.. He is a lovely man. Pray with me.”

DuVernay’s fellow creative, Shonda Rhimes shared the same sentiment, adding her own special anecdote of how Singleton inspired her.

“There was a time when I was struggling to pay my bills in film school and not sure this town was for me,” Rhimes recalled. “And one day, not long after Boyz N The Hood exploded on the scene, my phone rang. It was John Singleton.”

She continued, “John did not know me at all. But someone at USC had told him I was talented and he was kindly calling to offer me some words of encouragement. He told me to keep writing. I never forgot it. Praying for him and for his family now.”

Meawhile, other celebs like Kim FieldsNia Long, Loni LoveMorris Chestnut, and Oscar winner Jordan Peele have all been sending their well wishes.

Responding to the latest report on Singleton’s health from The Hollywood Reporter, Peele wrote, “Sending so much love to John and his family. Hope his recovery is speedy.”
