Happy Birthday Prince: New album ‘Originals’ hits TIDAL today

by

The Prince Estate/Warner Bros. Records/TIDALToday marks what would have been Prince‘s 61st birthday, and to celebrate the milestone TIDAL has gifted fans Originals, a new album from The Purple One.

As previously reported, the 15-track collection includes Prince’s original versions of songs that were recorded by other artists, including demo recordings of hits like Sheila E’s “The Glamorous Life,” The Bangles‘ “Manic Monday,” The Time‘s “Jungle Love” and, of course, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” recorded by both The Family and Sinead O’Connor.

Originals was curated by Prince’s estate in conjunction with music industry executive Troy Carter and JAY-Z, who shared a few words with FADER regarding the posthumous album.

“Prince led the way, for artistic freedom, for ownership. He’s one of the bravest people I can think of in the industry,” Jay’s statement reads. “He trusted us, not just me, but TIDAL, to continue his fight.”

Jay added, “Trying to help further that legacy through his music is an honor we couldn’t pass up as an organization dedicated to empowering artists. This gives his true fans that peek behind the curtain.”

Originals is currently exclusive to TIDAL users, but will be made available to other streaming services in the next two weeks. Following a June 21 digital and CD release, vinyl and limited-edition CD and vinyl packages will be released July 19.
