Mario’s new album inspired by his fascination with shadows

by

Gary Gershoff/WireImageMario is planning to release his first new album in nine years later in 2018, and he says the project was inspired by his unusual fascination with shadows.

“I’ve always thought it was cool how you could manipulate a shadow,” the 31-year-old singer tells Essence. “We see the shadow right here and this is my hand, obviously, but you can manipulate it to look like whatever you want. So, we’re always kind of projecting things and expressing ourselves in different ways. And, this is just my way of expressing myself.”

The album is called Dancing Shadows, and last week, Mario dropped the first single, “Drowning.” He describes the music on his upcoming album as “cosmic soul.”

“There are grungier records [on the disc],” he adds, “and, then some more, I would say, traditional stuff.”

Dancing Shadows, Mario’s fifth solo album, will be the follow-up to his 2009 album, D.N.A.
