Ray Tamarra/FilmMagicMarlon Wayans, who played one of John Witherspoon‘s son in the ’90s sitcom The Wayans Bros., has announced he’ll be unable to attend the late actor’s upcoming funeral.

In an Instagram post, Wayans says he’s upset he won’t be able to “send off pops.”

“I’m broken up about it,” he wrote, sharing a photo of him and Witherspoon. “Unfortunately, have to work. I know you would tell me “mahlon, go get that PAPER! You better go get them keys.”

Marlon continued, reciting advice Witherspoon gave him. “‘See, you got a comedy key, a sitcom key a movie key, a stand up key… now go get that drama key now you gonna unlock all that PAPER’”.

“I’ll always hear you,” Wayans went on. “I’m glad every time we said goodbye it was always with a fatherly hug and kiss. So that’s the goodbye I’ll leave it with. #ripPOPS @johnnywitherspoon playing some Johnny Mathis “chances are” in your honour.”

Wayans also took time to “honour” Witherspoon with a funny post on Tuesday.

“In honour of @johnnywitherspoon I’m posting this outfit i know you’d be proud of me wearing,” Wayans wrote, captioning a photo of himself in a tightly fitted sailor suit.

He then added the hashtags, “#coordinated #ripjohnwitherspoon.”

Witherspoon died late last month in Los Angeles at the age of 77. He’s survived by his wife of over 30 years, Angela Robinson, and two sons.
