After years of releasing three Grammy-nominated R&B albums and working as a keyboardist for Maroon 5, Morton returned back to his gospel roots with his latest Grammy-nominated album, Gospel According to PJ.
According to a trailer, the documentary will give viewers a backstage look at the making of his self-produced album and follow his life-long journey with R&B and pop music influenced by his gospel background.
“Although I was putting out my R&B albums and [working] with Maroon 5, I never really left gospel music,” says Morton. “I don’t have to be a different PJ to write my R&B albums [or] to be in a pop band. I don’t have to be a different person to write [ballads like] ‘First Began’ or ‘Say So’ and then turn around and write [gospel anthems] ‘Let Go’ or ‘Over and Over.'”
“I’m the same person and God is so big that when we limit him to one thing it does a disservice. I just wanted to show people that it was possible,” he added.
The Making of Gospel According to PJ will feature childhood images of Morton and his father BishopPaul Morton, as well as appearances from Kirk Frankin, Smokie Norful and Tasha Cobbs Leonard, who will speak on Morton’s extraordinary music capabilities.
“Then and now, you are one of the most gifted musicians, singers, and creatives of our generation,” said Cobbs Leonard about the New Orleans native.
Tomorrow night, PJ Morton will close out 2020 with a performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, live from his hometown, as part of the Central Time Zone countdown, hosted by Big Freedia.
