Queen Naija again addresses backlash over past comments about Black women

Joelle GraceAri Lennox is featured on Queen Naija‘s forthcoming single, “Set Him Up,” and fans are not happy about it.

After seeing the negative commentary, Queen Naija addressed the critics who brought up her previous statements about Black women.

“lol the fact that people think they can get ‘rid’ of me or take me off my own song is ridiculous. I don’t want nor need y’all’s validation to continue to win!” Naija tweeted Sunday. “Whatever y’all say about or to me cannot stop my blessings. The ratio of people who love me outweighs the hate!”

The backlash stemmed from remarks Queen Naija made in a 2017 video on a former YouTube channel. The YouTuber-turned-singer discussed being bullied as a child by attackers she described as “black nappy-headed little girls” who were “jealous” of her hair.

Queen Naija apologized for her remarks, most recently last August in an Instagram Live video captured by Hollywood UnlockedShe explained the term “nappy-headed” was regularly used in her home growing up.

“I have never been a colorist. I have never felt that I was better because I was light-skinned. I feel like melanin’s beautiful,” said the 25 year old. “The words I have used in the past, they were probably ignorant. Not probably. They were ignorant. Back then, I didn’t know they were ignorant because that’s what I was just used to. I wasn’t that educated on my culture and wasn’t deeply rooted into it. But now, I see that I did offend a multitude of black women and I truly apologize, again, to anyone I have offended by using that term.”

Queen Naija and Ari Lennox’s new single, “Set Him Up,” drops Wednesday, April 7th.
