Britni Brown and Kevin Simmons were working the counter at Joe Van Gogh, a coffee shop on Duke’s campus, when the school’s Vice President of Student Affairs, Larry Moneta, came in to get a cup of coffee. Young Dolph’s “Get Paid” was playing, and the lyrics offended Moneta, Indy Week reports. Brown apologized and turned the song off immediately.
But, Moneta contacted Duke’s director of dining, who, in turn, contacted the owner of the coffee shop, and Brown and Simmons were let go from their jobs.
Dolph took to Twitter to voice his outrage, writing, “Whoever that VP is, he don’t give a damn about nobody but his self.”
He then invited the two to his performance at Rolling Loud hip-hop festival in Miami, where he brought them on stage, according to Revolt.
“So check this out, this what we gon’ do,” he said during the performance. “I know for a fact that the VP at that school get money, but he don’t get money like Dolph. So until y’all get a new job, I got $20,000 for y’all right now.”
Since the incident, Duke University’s president, Vincent E. Price, publicly denounced the termination.
“I am, in particular, sorry that the words of one of my senior administrators recently resulted in two individuals working for one of our on-campus vendors losing their jobs,” stated Price.
Joe Van Gogh has since apologized and has cut ties with the university.
“Joe Van Gogh has always been about bringing people together, not driving them apart. We are open to all people and we value people over our profits,” the company stated.
