Courtesy Alicia Keys Via TwitterPharrell handpicked Alicia Keys to lend her vocals to his new song, “It’s On Again” featuring Kendrick Lamar, which serves as the lead single from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack. The singer is now allowing fans the chance to see how the record came together.

“Want to come behind the scenes in the studio with and me? 😉 ” she tweeted before adding a link to her recently launched website, AKVault.com, where a video chronicling the making of the track is streaming.

In the eight-minute clip, Keys recalls Pharrell selecting her to be part of the soundtrack, which he scored alongside composer Hans Zimmer.

Since most super heroes in blockbuster films are men, Pharrell pointed out that he needed a song that highlighted strong women.  “That’s when he said, ‘That’s why I think you would be the perfect person to do this song, to really represent the women through this whole thing,'” Alicia says.

The song was finished in New York City, which Alicia says is “where the magic happened.” She adds that the record captures all the “heartbreak” that Spider-man goes through in the movie.

“I think there’s a time in all of our lives where you wonder can you get up and still go through every day, even when something has broken your heart so much,” she says. “You have to keep on going, and it has to be on again and that’s way the song ‘It’s On Again’ came together.”

She adds that Kendrick’s guest verse made the song complete. “His lyrics on that are so powerful and so deep, so rewind that back a couple times and just break down every lyric he wrote, ’cause it’s serious,” she laughs.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack will be available on April 22, while the film hits theaters on May 2.
