Jill Scott Featured in First Trailer for James Brown Biopic Get On Up

Timothy Hiatt/Getty ImagesJill Scott appears in the first trailer for Get On Up, the story of the “Hardest Working Man in Show Business,” James Brown.

Scott will portray one of Brown’s wives in a role specifically written for her. New Edition’s Ralph Tresvant is cast in the role Sam Cooke, and Aloe Blacc plays a member of Brown’s band The Fabulous Flames.

The two-minute 40-second promo clip gives us a fast-paced look at a variety of scenes from throughout the movie, which features 42 star Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul.  We see quick-cut glimpses of Brown’s childhood, his stint in prison, his burgeoning career as a performer, and his rise to superstardom.  The preview also shows Brown’s volatile relationship with his band, a visit he and his group made to Vietnam to entertain the troops, Brown executing one of his trademark splits on stage, and an infamous two-state car chase on which he led police.

Get On Up was directed by Tate Taylor — director and co-writer of the award-winning 2011 flick The Help — and also features Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Dan Aykroyd, Craig Robinson and Tika SumpterThe Rolling StonesMick Jagger is co-producing the movie.

Get On Up is scheduled to open in theaters August 1.
