Warner Bros. RecordsMany would agree Kendrick Lamar gained a lot of respect from his latest album, To Pimp A Butterfly, which included the standout hit “Alright.” Now, it looks like the rapper also found a new fan: Prince.
In an interview with Medium, the “Purple Rain” singer applauded the rapper for elevating his music to a new level.
“He just has something to say,” Prince said about Lamar. “It’s pure. And with Thundercat on the album? Come on. You’re not taking ‘Alright’ off my playlist!”
Aside from Lamar, Prince also enjoyed Kanye West‘s sample of Ray Charles on his 2005 song “Gold Digger.” “The way he made something new with that sample was perfect,” Prince said before praising Jill Scott, whose debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, “was the truth.”
Prince is planning to release his 38th studio album HITNRUN later this month, which will be available exclusively through TIDAL.
