Last week saw the release of R. Kelly‘s The Buffet, a project that the crooner recorded with his fans in mind. The singer tells ABC Radio that his album title reflects his intention to serve up different types of songs for a fan base that spans generations.

“I’ve been in the business for what, almost 30 something years now and by me having all different genres of fans and generations I had to give them something that would satisfy all different generations of fans,” he says.  “So that’s why I decided to do The Buffet because it allowed me to do different types of music — old school songs, you know, the sexual songs, the hip-hop songs, you know and it’s basically all you can hear.”

The veteran R&B singer also spoke on what he considers a successful project. “It’s successful in a sense to me before it comes out because I still have confidence in my ear when it comes to hearing music, and me being relevant and me continuing to upgrade my music but keep it the same at the same time, I think its successful before I even put it out,” Kelz says. “But you know a lot of stuff depends on the support of an album and that’s the next part that has to happen for it to be official.”

Overall, Kelly seems pleased with the fans that continue to support his music, especially those who praised the project and it’s creator on social media. “I don’t look at myself as a genius, but I guess that would be the greatest compliment I’ve gotten on Twitter,” Kelz says. “I’ve heard that a lot and it feels good that people look at you that way, but I just love music and just continue to do it.”

The Buffet enters at #1 on both the Billboard R&B Albums and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, marking Kelly’s thirteenth consecutive debut at either #1 or #2 on the R&B Albums chart.

The album, which includes collaborations with Tinashe, Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, Jhené Aiko and Jeremih, serves as the follow-up to 2013’s Black Panties.
