It’s no secret Sean “Diddy” Combs has made an indelible name for himself in hip-hop and the music industry overall. Over the course of his long career, the multihyphenate entertainer has helped kickstart and grow some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including legendary rapper Biggie Smalls. Many looking to achieve great music success may look to the mogul as inspiration; Revolt Media CEO Detavio Samuels told ABC Audio why that might be.

“Diddy is the model,” Samuels said at the 2022 Essence Festival of Culture. “Diddy is known for — he is the king of this disruption. Every industry and every category that he has touched he’s absolutely disrupted, which is why we know Revolt is gonna be on that energy.”

The leader of the Black news media company shared his thoughts on Diddy’s relevance after so many years and his long-lasting impact on music as a leader in the Black community.

“Diddy wasn’t the first rapper or the first producer, but he’s the first one that shows how you can take this rap money and this producer money and build empires,” he said.

Samuels attended the “party with a purpose” that is Essence Fest to be part of a conversation with McDonalds, a company invested in Revolt’s dream and vision, says Samuels. Describing how “honored” he was to attend, Samuels revealed his personal connection to his boss.

“He is such a source of inspiration, power, boldness,” Samuels said. “This man forces us to dream bigger than we have ever dreamed before in our lives.”

He added, “The work I’m doing here … It is all a function of the man at the top.”
