Columbia Records/Carlota GuerreroSolange is known for her deep reflection and searing truth heard in her lyrics, especially on her critically acclaimed album, A Seat at the Table.
Now the “Rise” singer is taking an equally honest look at a pivotal time in her life — as a seventeen-year-old — with a letter she penned to her teenage self for Teen Vogue.
She writes, “seventeen will be the hardest year of your life. it will grow you up almost immediately. you will lose your best friends whom you love so much to gun violence in a single moment, and give birth to a new one within a year.”
“there will be pain,” she adds. “there will be doubt there will be beauty, there will be the unknown. but most importantly, there will be you. a whole, whole lot of it. and you will feel good about who she is and who she is still becoming.”
Solange’s picked up several prestigious awards for A Seat at the Table, including a Grammy this year for Best R&B Performance. She also won a Webby Award for Webby Artist of the Year earlier this week, and is nominated for four BET awards this year.
