Marielle Franco, 38 black political activist and politician from Rio de Janeiro was gunned-down in her car Wednesday. This is why it matters, she dedicated her life and political career to defending human rights. She grew up in the Mare favela, one of the poorest communities in Rio de Janeiro. Franco fought tirelessly for the poor, for women, and gay rights. Her mission was to protect Rio de Janeiro’s most vulnerable communities. Her death has drew crowds of thousands of mourners and protesters that believe her death was an assassination.
