Study: Facial Recognition Technology Only Works Well On White Faces

by

A new study has determined facial recognition technology works fairly well — as long as face it’s recognizing is white. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, facial recognition algorithms are far less dependable when attempting to identify features of African-Americans and Asians. Researchers found the technology misidentified people from those ethnic backgrounds 10 to 100 times more often than it did Caucasian people, per the study. The institute’s results, revealed Friday, followed tests using 189 algorithms from 99 different developers. Among them were Intel, Microsoft and Toshiba, institute officials say. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
