Lena Horne is officially the first Black woman to have a Broadway theater named after her. This week, the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on West 47th Street was renamed the Lena Horne Theatre, according to CBS News. Her granddaughter, screenwriter Jenny Lumet, honored her, saying, “She would say, ‘Let it soar. Let your cup runneth over. Do your thing. Make more art and believe.’ The famed actress and civil rights activist made her Broadway debut in the 1934 production ‘Dance Wit Your Gods” and made her first onscreen appearance at age 21 in the 1938 film ‘The Duke Is Tops”. She also appeared in the film “The Wiz” with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross in 1978.
