John Legend returned to his alma mater to deliver the University of Pennsylvania’s 258th commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Music. Legend graduated from the school in 1999.
On Monday, the crooner told more than 5,000 graduates that finding love has been essential to his success. “The key to success, the key to happiness is to open your heart to love. Spending your time doing things you love and with people you love,” he said.
John’s wife Chrissy Teigen showed her support by attending the event. She tweeted, “My baby got another honorary doctorate! I have a bunch too I just don’t brag about all the time.”
Shortly after the ceremony, John thanked the institution for the opportunity. “Congratulations to the @Penn class of 2014! Thanks for having me!” he wrote on Instagram.
